MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A former Wisconsin National Guard Soldier has been awarded a Bronze Star for his actions in a fierce firefight in Iraq five years ago.
WISC-TV reports on Wednesday that Michael Olivas, of Sun Prairie, accepted the award during a quiet ceremony Tuesday in Middleton.
The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs says that on Jan. 30, 2005, Olivas was in the 1158th Transportation Co. providing security for a convoy when several vehicles broke down.
When the convoy stopped on a main route, it was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire.
Olivas' crew members were outside their gun truck assisting disabled vehicles when the ambush began.
Areas of fog tonight; warm and humid Sunday with a shower or T-storm possible.
