Just last week the sportfishing industry asked the Environmental Protection Agency to dismiss a petition to ban lead tackle. That's about the same time I came across a Wisconsin program pushing anglers to stop using lead jigs and sinkers. The petition, filed by the Center for Biological Diversity and several other organizations is being challenged by the American Sportfishing Association, National Marine Manufacturers Assn and others as being based on flawed science. A similar petition was presented to the EPA in 1992 but it was abandonded after findings the lead did not present a threat to any bird population, the economic impact was significant and the proposal was socially unacceptable. The fishing industry maintains those findings remain unchanged. Wisconsin already has a ban on lead in shotgun shells and is ramping up its programs to "get the lead out" of fishing while pushing a purported non-toxic equivalent. It took 2 years for the last decision from EPA.
