MERRILL (WAOW)-- A gas leak in Merrill evacuates part of the city's downtown.

It happened around 4 o'clock this afternoon near the intersection of 1st and Poplar. Construction crews working on the roads hit a gas line with a bulldozer. No one was hurt. We're told the line was a 2-inch natural gas line that had an odor added for situations like this. People in the area were evacuated including those at city hall. Residents could smell the odor as far as four blocks away. Emergency workers advised people in the area not to start their cars because of a combustion danger. A Captain with the Merrill Fire Department says accidents like this can happen with old roads that have unmarked lines.
