Former Fond du Lac official reports to jail

FOND DU LAC (AP) -- A former high-ranking city of Fond du Lac official who was convicted of viewing child pornography has begun serving his one-year jail sentence.

The Reporter of Fond du Lac reports Sunday that 60-year-old Benjamin W. Mercer reported to the Fond du Lac County Jail on Thursday.

Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Mark Strand says Mercer is serving the jail time that was attached to the eight years of probation Circuit Court Judge Dale English ordered on Jan. 23, 2008. Mercer's appeal took more than two years.

A jury has convicted the former city human resources director on 14 counts of possession of child pornography.

Strand says Mercer would be released if he had a job interview or got a job, but he would be required to return to jail when his work day is done.
