Gunmen storm Chechen government buildings

GROZNY, Russia (AP) -- At least three insurgents who stormed the parliament complex in Russia's volatile Chechnya region are dead along with at least two police officers and one parliamentary official.

Authorities say one insurgent set off a bomb at the gates of the parliament complex in the provincial capital, killing himself and wounding others.

A Chechen police spokesman says at least two other gunmen ran into the building and opened fire on the people inside. The attackers were killed in an ensuing gunfight with police.

Police say all of the attackers are believed to be dead.

Restive Chechnya in the Russian North Caucasus has been battling an Islamist insurgency for years despite the iron rule of its Moscow-backed president.
