DOT: October traffic deaths low

by Patrick Manning

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- The month of October showed the fifth lowest number of traffic deaths since World War II. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says last month 55 people died in traffic related accidents.

The Marathon County sheriff's department says the numbers are lower because people are slowing down and figuring out the risks of driving impaired.

"It's slowing down. Don't be distracted or impaired and wear a seatbelt while you are driving and you'll be less likely to be a victim in a crash," says Lt. Dale Wisnewski.

The safest October since World War II was last year with just 39 traffic-related deaths.

The DOT says as the winter driving season approaches, be sure to get your car prepared and be extra alert in bad weather.
