WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Veterans Day is still a few days away but some people in Wausau started their celebration early.
The American Legion kicked off the week with a 21 gun salute Monday morning. After a flag ceremony in the Peterson/Kraemer parking lot on 6th Street, everyone was invited to a free lunch at the Filling Station to honor the veterans.
"They're very proud of their service to their country," said Greg Zoromski, the owner of the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home. "It's a great thing they've done for us to keep us free. And we respect them and honor them."
Monday marked the inaugural celebration for vets but Zoromski said he plans to do it again in future years. He said the vets enjoy being involved in the ceremony and are proud to have fought for our freedom.
Donations made at the luncheon go towards the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.
