Iraq War veteran saves the day

WAUSAU(WAOW)--Chris Brummel may be a new employee to the Days Inn hotel but as an Iraq War veteran, he's no stranger to stressful situations.

That's what walked into the Days Inn on October 15th while Brummel was behind the counter. A Milwaukee man Derrick Thornton faces charges of kidnapping and soliciting a prostitute after trying to bring a 22 year old woman to the hotel.

Brummel says a woman came in to purchase a room in cash. Police say, Thornton was behind it. Brummel says he saw a man drop the woman off and wait in the parking lot, he says the woman seemed fine at first.

"Her and I talked for a while I usually do that with my guest I make sure they're comfortable and I talk with them. She was really happy at first," said Brummel.

Brummel says they talked for 30 minutes before she received a phone call. "She kind of got a little scared but I just assumed it was another guest, boyfriend getting mad or whatever," said Brummel.

The woman headed to her room but Brummel says 20 minutes hadn't even went by before the woman came back. "She was crying, shaking. She seemed scared and paranoid, any door that would open or close she was jumping," said Brummel.

Brummel says the woman asked him to hide her, at first Brummel didn't know what to think "Is she trying to rob me, is she seriously in trouble I had to weigh the options and I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt and that's what I did with her," said Brummel.

Brummel hid the woman inside a meeting room and called 911, when police arrived Brummel matched the description the woman had given him to her abductor. "He came down to get coffee making it look like he was doing nothing. He was looking around and I notice right off the bat something wasn't right," said Brummel.

When police asked to speak to the man, he took off running for the parking lot, driving away in a vehicle Brummel later I.D. Brummel says he doesn't consider himself a hero.

"Same thing when I was deployed you have a job and you do it, I really don't think I was a hero I just did my job," said Brummel.

The criminal complaint on Thornton says, he had previously kidnapped the same woman back in 2009 forcing her to have sex for money.
