PRESS RELEASE: Waushara Co hunters held at gunpoint

News Release

November 8, 2010

On November 7, 2010 at 11:11 am the Waushara County Communication Center received a 911 call that hunters were being held at gun point by an unknown individual. Officers from the Waushara County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol and the Department of Natural Resources responded to a location in the northeast part of the Town of Oasis.

While the officers were responding the Communication Center received a call from the person with the firearm. He refused to put the firearm down until he had visual contact with law enforcement officers. At that time he did put the firearm down and responded to the officers commands appropriately.

The initial investigation indicates that 3 hunters were tracking a wounded deer on property that they incorrectly thought they had permission to be on when they were observed by the hunter that had leased the property. Shot or shots were fired, but nobody was injured. The incident remains under investigation by the Waushara County Sheriff's Office.

The District Attorney's Office will be considering criminal charges of Trespass and/or Reckless Endangering Safety.

It is imperative that hunters and others that are in the woods do not place themselves in jeopardy of being the victim or perpetrator of criminal activity. The privilege of hunting and using another persons property does not give anyone the right to violate the law or place another person at risk of being frightened, seriously injured or killed.
