MINNEAPOLIS (WAOW) – The UW-Stevens Point tandem of Harrison Niemann and Staci Pomering have given the UW-Stevens Point men's and women's hockey teams a clean sweep of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) weekly honors, as each was named the league's Athlete of the Week. Niemann was also named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's hockey Athlete of the Week.
Niemann, a junior forward was named the men's division Athlete of the Week for his outstanding play last weekend at Bethel and at #15 Hamline. Niemann notched four points on two goals and two assists, helping UWSP to a pair of non-conference victories.
The headline win for the Pointers came on Saturday night when they beat #15 Hamline 5-1. Niemann assisted on the first and third goals. UW-Stevens Point led 2-1 after the first period and it got some much desired breathing room when Niemann set up Johnny Meo at 9:39 of the second. Both of Niemann's assists were on even strength goals.
Last Friday UWSP beat Bethel 2-0, with Niemann scoring both goals. His first came on the power play at 10:00 of the first period, the second at 17:17 of the third - also on the power play. Niemann's four-point weekend vaulted him to five total points on the year, good for third on the Pointer roster. The two wins also sent UWSP into the uscho.com national rankings at #10.
Sophomore goalie Staci Pomering (Roscoe, Ill. / Hononegah) was selected Player of the Week in the Women's Division for her 40-save performance last weekend in two wins over St. Thomas. The Pointers and Pomering moved to 4-0 on the season.
Pomering made 23 saves on 24 shots against the Tommies last Friday, nine of which came with St. Thomas on the power play. UWSP went on to win 4-1. Pomering followed that performance up with a 17 save outing in a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon. St. Thomas finally got a puck past Pomering with 2:19 left in the third. Pomering stood tall in the final minutes, protecting the one-goal lead and finishing the sweep for the Pointers. On the season Pomering is 4-0 with a 1.50 goals against average. She has made 91 total saves and has a save percentage of .938.
The 10th-ranked Pointer men's hockey team will host third-ranked St. Norbert College in a weekend series beginning Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena at 7 p.m. The Pointer women's team, who is receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com women's poll, has this weekend off before returning to action next week Friday and Saturday, November 19-20, with a home-and-home series with St. Norbert College.
