MADISON - Wisconsin running back Montee Ball struggled when he learned he'd be limited to third string behind feature back John Clay and true freshman James White.
After all, Ball was a freshman himself when he took the backup role from veteran Zach Brown on the depth chart the prior season.
Ball said he was shocked at falling behind White. But he's been working hard to return to the field.
The sixth-ranked Badgers (8-1, 4-1 Big Ten) have had significant depth at running back in recent years, and injuries gave Ball another chance.
He responded with 127 yards and two second-half touchdowns as Wisconsin rallied in a 34-13 win over Purdue.
Now, Ball may get his first start of his career on Saturday against Indiana (4-5, 0-5).
