Pointer Coach Miech and 5 Players Make All-WIAC Soccer Team

MADISON (WAOW) - For the second straight year, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Emily Gerber was voted the Player of the Year to top the 22 individuals selected to the 2010 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Soccer Team by the league coaches.  In addition, UW-Stevens Point head coach Sheila Miech was chosen the Coach of the Year.

Gerber, a junior midfielder, is the first individual in conference history to earn the player of the year trophy in back-to-back seasons and just the second to win the award twice.  UW-River Falls' Sarah Carlson claimed the honor in 2003 and 2005.

Gerber ranks second in the WIAC with 32 points and eight assists, while placing third with 12 goals.  She registered multiple points in eight of 15 matches, including a season-high seven against Finlandia University (Mich.) Sept. 26.  Gerber is second on UW-Whitewater's all-time list with 95 career points and 42 career goals.

Repeat selections on the first team from last season were:  UW-Eau Claire's Megan Hillesheim, UW-Oshkosh's Nikki Reed, UW-River Falls' Cassie Stang, UW-Stevens Point's Mary Jean Cornelius, Liz Hunter and Kelly Lloyd.  Cornelius was also honored in 2008, along with UW-Platteville's Allie Metcalfe.

Miech earned the coach of the year honor for the third consecutive season and ninth time in her career.  Her string of three straight coaching plaques matches UW-Eau Claire's Sean Yengo (2005-07) for the longest in WIAC women's soccer history.  In 2010, she has directed the Pointers to a 16-2-1 record, the conference tournament crown and a share of the regular-season championship.  Miech is in her 24th year at UW-Stevens Point and owns a 352-109-30 record.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.
