ANTIGO (WAOW)--Workers at Evergreen Terrace Assisted Living commemorated Veterans Day, Thursday.

Among them, 98-year-old World War Two veteran, Ed Vavruska. Vavruska was stationed at Iwo Jima during the war. During Taps he recalls the friends he made during service and the ones left behind. "I just choke up, recalling the buddies I had killed. It just hurts a little."

Diane Larzelere is the Activities director at Evergreen Terrace. She says staff members honor veterans every year. "We try to honor our Veterans in any possible way we can," Larzelere said.

This year, National Guard member Courtney Drake sang the national anthem. "She [Drake] works here and she's also a National Guard soldier. So she does her weekend drills," Larzelere said. "One day I was in the other room and I heard her out here singing while she was tending to the residents. I came out to listen to her and her voice was gorgeous. So I said 'Would you sing the National Anthem?' and she said she would be honored."

Larzelere says the event means a lot to veterans like Vavruska. "Even if we have one veteran we're going to honor them on that day. We do every year."
