STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- Getting around Stevens Point will be a whole lot easier. The City has just bought two acres of property from Portage County to build a new transit center.

The Mayor of Stevens Point spoke with Newsline 9 and says the city's public transportation system is growing. With the possibility of gas prices going up in the future, something has to be done.

"Our transit facility is a really important key piece in maintaining the growth of our transit system. People realize it's a very easy way to get throughout the area, and we've modified our transit routes to become more efficient," says Andrew Halverson, mayor of Stevens Point.

Halverson says down the road they would like to make it a hub for regional bus lines.. and partner with other communities such as Wausau, Wisconsin Rapids, and Mosinee to allow for more buses to travel through area.

The property was purchased by tax dollars and they plan on breaking ground by early 2012
