STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team will head to Dubuque, Iowa and the campus of Loras College for the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Tournament this weekend.
The Pointers will play Denison University (Ohio) (16-5-1) on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m. The fourth-ranked Duhawks (22-1) will face Otterbein University (Ohio) (20-0-1) in the opening game of the day at 12:30 p.m.
The 22nd-ranked Pointers (18-2-1) advanced to the round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Sunday. In the tournmanet's opening round, UWSP tallied four goals to defeat host Macalester 4-2.
This is the 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Pointers and their fifth appearance in the sweet 16. The Pointers last advanced to the round of 16 in 2008. The Pointers own a record of 16-14-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
The 20th-ranked Denison Big Red's make their fourth Sweet 16 appearance in program history, their first since 2006. Denison opened the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 victory over penn State-Altoona and then posted a 2-0 victory over the eighth-ranked Titans of Illinois Wesleay.
The Big Red's are led by Jen Clemmer, who has tallied 14 goals and 33 points including seven game-winners.
In the two team's only ever meeting back in 1993, Denison earned a 3-1 victory in the season opener.
The winners of the opening round games will take to the pitch on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.
