ANTIGO (WAOW) -- In less than a weeks time, four convenience stores have been held up between Antigo and Wittenberg. Authorities aren't sharing many details, but tell Newsline 9 no suspects have been caught.
Last Wednesday managers say Marty's Shell gas station in Antigo was held up by a man wearing a ski mask he showed a weapon, demanded cash, and ran from the scene.
Friday at 9:30 pm, another Shell station but this time in Wittenberg. A clerk says the suspect showed a weapon that was wrapped in a sock. He got away with cash.
That same night, around 11:30, clerks say they were held up by two men while closing this Route 66 station in Birnamwood, and the robber got away with over $3,000 in cash.
And finally Sunday, another Shell station in Wittenberg, the manager says the suspect had a weapon, also wrapped in a sock.
The clerk refused to give him cash and a boy chased the him out of the store into some woods.
Antigo police say are investigating to see if they've been hit by the same people.
"You know you are hitting the same types of businesses. I think that type of business and this short area and a string of them, there seems to be a connection or a couple of people that know what's happening," says Antigo police chief Eric Roller.
Now clerks in the area are told to keep a close watch on their surroundings.
"If they even feel something is wrong, they are told to just call the cops even if it doesn't happen and just if someone is suspicious and walking around aimlessly and not doing anything, they are told to call the cops right away," says Jayme Guenthir.
Guenthir doesn't work nights anymore, but when she did felt a little on edge working late at night.
"Being here by yourself, I dunno, it's once you close it gets a little scary. People knocking on your doors because they want in."
Antigo police say if you are in the building during a robbery to stay calm and don't try to be a hero.
"Don't do anything [rational], keep calm, try to gather as much information on what's happened to help investigators, but other than that just don't put yourself in danger," Roller adds.
