MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Kyle Schueller scored the game's only touchdown in the first quarter as Edgar won a defensive slugfest over Fond Du Lac Springs, 6-3, to win the WIAA Division 6 championship on Thursday.
Edgar (14-0) finished its title defense by holding 11 of its 14 opponents under seven points, only giving the Ledgers (12-2) a 34-yard field goal by Brad Freiherr as time expired in the first half.
Schueller scored a 4-yard touchdown on Edgar's opening drive, capping a 12-play, 49-yard series, more than enough offense for the defensive-minded Wildcats.
The game featured two defending state champions.
Fond Du Lac Springs won the Division 5 title last year while Edgar played in its 10th state final, which leads the WIAA's membership for most appearances.
