GILMAN (WAOW) -- The Gilman High School football team hauled home a Gold Ball. Thursday, they beat out defending champs Burlington Catholic Central for the Division 7 title.
Friday, the guys experienced a hero's homecoming. Community members lined the streets with signs and waves, to welcome home the championship team.
Players were escorted through town, eventually reaching the school where happy classmates were waiting to show their Pirate pride.
"Both sides of the ball, it was great," said Gilman player Kade Latz. "We couldn't ask for anything more. Our defense did well. Our offense responded well to a defense that we've never really seen before."
"There were a lot of good ingredients on the field, and a lot of good athleticism," said Coach Robin Rosemeyer. "Kids that work hard, they play tough and the end result is very fitting for what they are."
To players and parents delight, the team's victory made the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
