WAUSAU (WAOW) -- It's no secret that many Wisconsinites are still searching for jobs, and there's evidence of that at the new Olive Garden in Rib Mountain. According to management, more than 400 people have applied for 165 available spots at the new restaurant. Olive Garden General Manager Cari Krueger says "I was a little surprised. I knew we'd have a great turnout, but it was pretty overwhelming. It was surprising to see how many came out and saw us right away."
Not all jobs are as easy to spot as The Olive Garden. It's difficult to find a job on your own, and there are free services provided to you in order make your search less painful. The Marathon County Job Center is one such resource. The job center has a database that makes it easier to track down potential employment opportunities.
So, what is available to you right now? Local Veterans Employment Representative Gary Albrecht says "There have been some seasonal jobs that have been listed with us. Not as much as in prior years, but you know some of the mail order companies in the Rhinelander area. Stevens point and Marshfield are doing seasonal hiring and also down in Mosinee, so there has been some seasonal hiring that's going on."
One such mail order company hiring in Wausau is Eastbay. According to a company representative, while 260 people have already been hired at the call center, another 150 will be hired in the distribution center over the holiday period. Outside of Eastbay, the job center website has shown 594 postings in the past 30 days, many with multiple positions available.
12 of those postings are for UPS. The delivery service needs extra help with delivering packages. Other positions are more permanent. 60 postings come from Aspirus, and no, they're not all nursing and doctor openings. There are also openings for customer service reps, groundskeepers, cooks, and accounting assistants, among others.
U.S. Bank and Associated Bank are hiring for teller and personal banker positions. Home Depot in Wausau is also hiring. The Associated Press reports other national chains such as Pier One have already announced increased hiring for the holidays, and at each of Kohl's nearly two-thousand stores, officials will hire an average of 35 new employees.
If you feel like you need some extra preparation before entering the workforce again, here's another free option. Gary Albrecht says "We also have a resume workshop here that anybody is available to come into, we can actually set up, do mock interviews for people to help them in the interviewing process, so there's a pretty wide range of services that we have available at the job center."
So if you are looking for employment, there are still many opportunities for you out there.
