Edward Garey, age 88, died peacefully Monday, November 22, 2010 at the Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice House in Wausau, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Ann Garey, along with his parents Edward S. Garey and Frances (Lundberg) Garey, brother Warren "Pete" Garey and sisters, Juanita Nagell and Patricia Young. He is survived by his children, Linda Garey, Stephen Garey, Janet (John) Ingold and Andrea (Rick) Alstad, in addition to five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
Born January 13, 1922 and raised in Mankato Minnesota, Ed was the third oldest of four children. Both Ed and brother, Pete, joined the Marine Corps in 1942, and Ed went on to serve in the South Pacific in World War II, mainly in the Solomon Islands. In 1945, he returned to Minneapolis and enrolled at the University of Minnesota where he met Barbara von Eschen. They were married December 20, 1947. After working as a Dairy and Poultry District Sales Manager for Armour and Company for a number of years, Ed went into partnership with a fellow salesman from Armour forming an independent food brokerage partnership in South Saint Paul, Minnesota. In 1965 the brokerage's customer base was sold to Pillsbury, a major supplier to the brokerage. Ed and Barb moved to Racine, Wisconsin with their four children. After working as National Sales Manager for C&D Duck Company in Yorkville, Wisconsin for a number of years, Ed decided to strike out on his own again and created a solely owned brokerage BALJES Sales. During these years Ed joined and was very active in the Racine Rotary Club. In 1985, Ed and Barb retired to their lake home in the Minocqua, Wisconsin area where they lived for 24 years. In retirement, Ed enjoyed his passions of golf, reading and traveling, as well as being a member of the American Legion in Minocqua. In 2009, Ed and Barb moved to the Renaissance Assisted Living facility in Weston, Wisconsin.
A Gathering of Remembrance will be held at the Brainard Funeral Home, 5712 Memorial Court, Weston, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 27, from 1:30 to 3:00 PM. Veteran Honors will be held at 3:00 PM by the American Legion Montgomery-Plant Post #10.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are suggested for donation to the Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice House, 333 Pine Ridge Boulevard, Wausau, WI 54401.
