MADISON (Press Release) - UW-Stevens Point senior Matt Olp has been named the WIAC Athlete of the Week for men's swimming. While leading the Pointers to the overall team title, Olp swam on four winning relays teams at the UW-La Crosse Relays. His 400-yard medley relay team finished first with a time 3:32.43, while the winning 200-yard medley relay team finished with a time of 1:36.99. Olp's closest race of the day was in the 300- yard individual medley relay, while his largest margin of victory was in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a winning margin of five seconds.
Rhinelander native Jake Smith, a senior at UW-Superior, was the league honoree for men's basketball. Smith played a huge role in the Yellowjackets going 3-0 to start the season last week. He led the Yellowjackets in scoring and rebounding, scoring 27 points and hauling in nine rebounds in a 75-73 win at University of Dubuque (Iowa). He shot 10-of-14 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, while playing a team-leading 32 minutes. On Nov. 19 against Macalester College (Minn.), a game the Yellowjackets won 77-58, Smith had 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. He shot 6-of-9 from the field and led the team with 31 minutes played. On Nov. 20, Smith played 34 minutes, scoring 19 points and pulling down seven rebounds in a 71-68 win over Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.). For the week, Smith shot 24-of-39 (61.5 percent) from the field, 5-of-10 (50.0 percent) from three-point range and 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line. He had 27 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks.
