Winter storms mixed with holiday travel cause fender benders

WAUSAU(WAOW)--Wednesday night's winter storms caused tons of accidents on Northcentral Wisconsin roadways.

Around 4 p.m. the snow started and shortly after so did the fender benders. Wisconsin State Patrol says within the hour they received calls for more than 20 crashes.

Brittany Smith, Town of Texas resident says, "There is plenty to come it's just the beginning."

Neighbors near Highway W in the Town of Texas saw more than 5 cars slide into the ditch on a hill on Highway W.

Leroy Schoebke, Town of Texas resident says, "This hill is very dangerous and I mean it's bad. All it takes is someone with bald tires and then traffic backed up and then you got a problem."

"I was directing traffic with my handy flash light just telling people that there was no way through and that there were too many cars in the ditch. I just sent them back around and helped them out," said Smith.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is suggesting to people that before they head out, they need to plan for slick conditions.

Sergeant Mike Klingenberg, Wisconsin State Patrol says, "Make sure you leave a little earlier so your not in a rush to get to your destination. If the roads start to get bad or it's raining or snowing slow down and give yourself plenty of space between you and the car a head of you."

Sergeant Klingenberg says even the most confident driver can get caught up in this kind of weather. His department is always ready when accidents happen.

"You might be confident in your driving ability but you have to watch the traffic around you," said Klingenberg.
