MEDFORD (WAOW) -- Sr. Kateri's first grade class at Holy Rosary school in Meford goes into business to help other kids.

They call it a Kids Helping Kids First Grade Sale.  It started more than 20 years ago as a snack sale to raise money to help those who need it.

Sr. Kateri says, "The snack sale did about 5 or 6 years and then I started out with toys and books and games.  Then it grew."

It grew into a room full of items donated by parents and parishioners.  Other students in the school then come in a shop for holiday gifts.

The first graders do all the work from hanging posters to sorting and displaying the goods and selling!  The items come cheap but they sell like crazy.

In each of the last few years more than $500 has been raised then donated either into the Medford community or to a non-profit dedicated to helping kids.

Sister Kateri says she uses the sale as a lesson on giving.

"We're thankful for what we have.  We have shelter, we have food, we have clothing and now we're giving it to someone who has less to reach out to kids.  They're very responsive to that. Little kids are very giving."

Hearing from the students, they get the message.

When asked why he likes helping kids, Brigham Kelly says, :So they get toys to play with!"

Alicia Venzke adds, "It feels like I'm a better person because I'm doing things for the poor kids."

And that's why Sister Kateri's first graders are Class of the Week.

This year the first graders raised more than $590!
