Backlash feared as some in GOP push social issues

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Fixing the economy is the top priority, but Republicans in state governments are considering how to pursue action on social issues such as abortion, gun rights and even divorce laws.

The GOP won greater control of governorships and legislatures in November. And the pressure on social issues is only slightly below the surface in states where conservatives' top goals previously have been foiled.

The tension is particularly visible in Kansas, but is also present in Oklahoma, Michigan, Wisconsin and other states.

Some Republican legislators worry about getting bogged down in such issues. But it's possible that an election largely driven by voters' economic concerns could wind up having much broader social consequences.
