STORM LAKE, IOWA (PRESS RELEASE)- Josi Schultz had 17 points and Ashley Averkamp finished with 14 points to help lead the Pointers past Buena Vista University on Saturday at the Buena Vista Classic.
The Pointers used a pair of big runs to help put away the Beavers, as they had a 12-0 run midway through the first half to put them up 27-12 with 7:56 remaining in the first half. The Pointers led the Beavers by 18 at the break, 41-23.
The Beavers cut the Pointer lead to four with 12:05 to go as they made the score 49-45. The Pointers responded with a 14-0 run however to put the lead back to 18 and they did not look back from there.
Sam Barber was a big part of the 14-0 run the Pointers had as she scored all nine of her points during the run. Barber also had three rebounds and a block during the run.
Andrea Flease had a solid night for the Pointers as she finished with eight points and led the team with seven assists.
The Pointer defense was also a big part of the victory as they forced 21 turnovers. The Pointers have forced at least 20 turnovers in every game so far this season. The Pointers also held the Beavers to a shooting percentage of .298 on the afternoon.
The Pointers also dominated the Beavers in rebounding as they pulled down 51 boards compared to the Beavers 31. Averkamp led the team in rebounds with eight.
The win improved the Pointers to 4-1 on the season as they will start up WIAC play on Wednesday when they host UW-Stout at the Berg Gynasium. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
