Action begins this week in Wis. spring election

MADISON (AP) -- Candidates who want to run in Wisconsin's spring election can begin circulating nomination papers on Wednesday.

Races up in the April 5 election include a state Supreme Court seat now held by Justice David Prosser, and state court of appeals seats in Wausau-based District 3 held by Judge Gregory Peterson and Madison-based District 4 held by Judge Paul Higginbotham. If a primary is required, it will be held on Feb. 15.

The Supreme Court race is for a 10-year term. Appeals court terms are six years. The terms begin Aug. 1.

Candidates must file the required number of signatures by 5 p.m. Jan. 4 to get on the ballot. The judicial races are non-partisan.
