Regina (Jean) Smith, age 94, passed away on November 28, 2010, at the home of her son, in the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. She was born June 29, 1916 in Frackville, PA., the only daughter of Michael and Augusta (Rodrian) Butler. She earned her nurse's cap from Ashland State Hospital in 1935. Jean eloped to Philadelphia with Wendell Smith on December 23rd, 1938. Smitty preceded her in death on December 24, 1991, as did her parents, two brothers, and their sixteen-year-old daughter, Wendall.

Jean is survived by their only son, Nick (Gail) Smith of Rothschild and one brother, Vincent (Rosemary) Butler of Hershey, PA. She also has three granddaughters and seven great grandchildren: Wendy (Luke) Coenen of Hatley and their children, Jake, Vince and Kate; Stephanie (Michael) Mille of Appleton and their children, Allison and Michael; Jennifer (Craig) Fisher of Appleton and their children, Garrett and Natalie; and many nieces and nephews.

Jean was very proud of her varied nursing career, starting out as an industrial nurse (17 years) in Pennsylvania, then working at Waukesha Memorial Hospital for 15 years and ending up working at the Tomahawk Hospital and a Nursing Home. She was an active member and choir participant of many churches, ending up at First Presbyterian Church of Wausau. Jean was an avid reader and bridge player, a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a Tomahawk Homemaker and a member of the Tomahawk Literary Club. She so enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be missed by all.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church, 406 Grant St., Wausau, WI. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church. The family thanks the staff of Aspirus Palliative Care and Comfort Care and hospice Services for its compassion, kindness and care these last few months. Brainard Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
