(WAOW) - It's a big day on the basketball court as several area teams hit the hardwood for their season openers.

Both the Marathon boys and girls teams cruise to wins over Mosinee at home.

Also on the boys' side, DC Everest takes Madison East down to the wire before falling 56-47 in overtime. Pacelli and Newman square off in Wausau in a battle of the Cardinals and Wausau West puts away a feisty Lakeland squad at home.

In other girls' action, Edgar hangs on to take down Thorp at home and Antigo comes into Wausau East and takes down the Lumberjacks.

On the ice, defending state runner-up Wausau West plays its season opener at Chippewa Falls and rolls to a 10-4 win.
