WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The holidays are just around the corner and groups work together to make it merrier for military families. Several Christmas tree growers in the area gathered in Wausau to send Christmas trees to the folks who serve our country.

The Trees for Troops program works with the local American legion club to donate 200 trees to military families.

Tree growers say it's their way to serve our country.

"Well the growers are people that generally can't get out and protect our country like our troops can and it's our way of saying thank you to the troops," says Charles Newby, a tree farmer and coordinator of the tree donations for the Wausau area.

Coordinators say trees from this area will go to families living at the Air Force base in Lakeland, FL.

Nationwide, the Trees For Troops program donates over 16,000 Christmas trees.

Some even go to Iraq and Afghanistan. Transportation of the trees is provided by FedEx.
