STEVENS POINT- The Pointers built up a 44-21 halftime lead as they won their conference opener over UW-Stout 79-55 Wednesday night at Berg Gymnasium.
The Pointers got things rolling right away as they jumped out to a 20-4 lead with 12:39 left in the first half. They hit three three-pointers during the stretch, including two by Andrea Flease.
UW-Stout never got the score closer than 18 points as the Pointers coasted to an easy home victory.
The Pointers defense was outstanding once again, as they forced 20 plus turnovers for the sixth straight game, this time forcing 26 Blue Devil turnovers. Flease led the team with four steals.
Not only were the Pointers forcing turnovers but they also capitalized off of those turnovers as they outscored the Blue Devils 32-2 in the points off turnovers category.
The Pointers also distributed the ball very well as 21 of their 38 shots had an assist. Freshman guard Alyssa Olp led the Pointers with five assists. Olp also had five points and six rebounds.
Leading the way for the Pointer scoring was Sam Barber who had 11 points. Britta Petersen also had 10 points to help lead the Pointer offense.
All in all 13 of 14 players scored for the Pointers, as Josie Schultz and Jenna Pitt each scored nine points off the Pointer bench. The Pointers bench outscored the Blue Devil bench 51-15.
The Pointers also won the battle of the boards as they finished with a 42-34 edge in rebounding. Olp's six rebounds and Myranda Tyler finished with five rebounds.
Tricia VanVreede led the Blue Devils as she finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sami Schoeder chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds.
