Wausau leaders urge safety this winter

WAUSAU (WAOW)--Wausau leaders want to make sure you don't get a ticket this winter.

The city's Public Works employees remind you that during a "Snow Emergency" you can't park on any city streets.

Here's a list of other safety tips:

  • The City's Public Works Department asks for cooperation observing a "Snow Emergency" when declared; this means NO PARKING on City streets at anytime while in effect. To enable snowplow drivers to more effectively plow, please place garbage containers in a shoveled area inside the curb line (NOT in the street).
  • Remove snow banks at the end of your driveway to enable clearer view of roadway.
  • Remember to keep mailbox access cleared of snow.
  • Vehicles following snowplows shall not be closer than 75 feet at anytime while the snowplow is moving. When the snowplow is stopped, a vehicle behind the snowplow shall stop at least 20 feet behind the snowplow.
  • Veolia Waste Services will NOT pick-up your garbage if it is placed on top of snow banks. Drivers have been advised that they should not put themselves in danger with slippery conditions to remove waste containers from snow banks. Please be considerate of the drivers and clear an area close to ground level near the normal placement of containers.
  • Snowmobile and ATV riding on City streets is illegal and a fine of $100 plus court costs can be imposed if cited for this violation. Please call the Wausau Police Dept. at 715-261-7800, Option #1 or Dispatch if you see this activity taking place.
  •  "Adopt a Fire Hydrant" in your neighborhood and keep it clear of snow at all times. Help an elderly or disabled person with their hydrant maintenance, if possible. The hydrants have a tendency to disappear in the snow banks!
