Athletes compete at Special Olympics Bowling Tournament

WESTON (WAOW)--Over 350 athletes took to Weston Lanes to compete at the Special Olympics Wisconsin Northern State Bowling Tournament.

This was the first year the tournament was split into a northern and southern competition.

Although athletes competed to win medals, coaches said the even is more about acceptance and fun than competition.

Organizer Jerry Lyon said, "We're really giving these individuals with disabilities the voice to really stand forward and say that I can do everything that everyone else can do."

Hundreds of volunteers helped helped to make the event a success as well. Members of the community including 20 percent of the student body from Rosholt High School assisted bowlers and handed out medals.
