WAUSAU (WAOW) -- 2,400 men and women died on Pearl Harbor day including servicemen from right here in Wausau.

The Montgomery-Plant Post 10 American Legion Building in Wausau was named in honor of Donald Plant, who died in the attacks at Pearl Harbor.

Plant was first Wausau World War II casualty. Plant's son, Donald Kersemeier, gave a presentation about his father Tuesday night.

"He was described as having gone to an airplane and helped an injured pilot, trying to get a pilot out of the plane and into safety," said Kersemeier. "It was at that point that he was shot. So that to me is a mark of heroism."

Kersemeier collected his father's stories through letters he wrote through out his tour of duty overseas. Kersemeier said his father volunteered to stand guard that fateful night, but that he fought bravely and courageously for his country.
