Winter storm leads to dangerous wind chills - WAOW - Newsline 9, Wausau News, Weather, Sports

Winter storm leads to dangerous wind chills

Tonight: Mainly Clear and cold. Low: -4 with wind chills 20 to 30 below. Wind: NW 10-15

Monday: Mostly sunny and cold.   High: 7, Wind: NW 10-15

First we dealt with the snow with totals over a foot in most areas. Today it has been the blowing and drifting snow with people reporting drifts up to 5 feet or higher.  Now to add to the snow we are going to add the cold.  Temperatures are going to dip to near 5 to 10 below with wind chills approaching 30 below overnight!

We have several advisories/warnings around the area….

Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca and Waushara are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 10 am Monday because of blowing/drifting snow and for wind chills overnight.

Ashland and Iron are under a Winter Storm Warning until 6 pm this evening.  This area could see an additional 2 to 4 inches on top of blowing and drifting snow.

Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Menominee, Oneida, Portage and Wood are under a Wind Chill Advisory until 10 am Monday.  Wind chills will dip to 20 to 25 below tomorrow morning.

The story for the next couple days will not be snow but the cold.  Highs on Monday and Tuesday will be in the single digits to low teens.  Even as the winds calm down on Monday into Tuesday it will still be bitterly cold with the actual temperature.  We will see plenty of sunshine as an arctic high sits over us.

There are a few chance of snow towards the end of the week but nothing is looking major right now.  For now I believe the best chance at seeing any accumulating snow will be on Thursday, with a slight chance on Friday and Sunday.  Highs by the end of the week will be in the low 20's.

Have a great night and make sure to bundle up! Meteorologist Kristen Connolly
