Winter storm tests snow plows, drivers

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW)--Snow plows were out in full force in Marathon County Saturday, but the highway department says all but four county plows will be called in by 8 o'clock p.m.

The county's plows and other machinery built to battle the snow will not be working throughout the night due to low visibility and maxed out driving hours.

Foreman Russ Graveen said this is one of the worst storms he's seen in 20 years of working for the highway department.

He said you should avoid getting in your car unless it is absolutely necessary. "If you need to travel, pack emergency gear..blankets, gloves, extra boots."

Plows will be out again at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, but high winds and very low temperatures will make road conditions even more dangerous.

Despite the treacherous conditions, Graveen and the Marathon County Highway Department are pushing hard. "We're doing our best," he said.
