The Wausau City Council approves a 25 percent increase in the sewage rate.
The last increase was 8 percent in January 2009.
Three years before that, rates went up 20 percent.
Wausau Wastewater Treatment Plant leaders say the utility has been struggling financially for a number of years.
And Wausau maintains relatively low rates compared to similar-sized communities.
The facility, originally built in 1940, has equipment that has reached the end of its useful life.
