Kohler union prepares to vote on labor contract

KOHLER (AP) -- More than 2,200 union members at Kohler Co. are preparing to vote on a new labor contract that union leaders have criticized as unreasonable.

The vote is set for Sunday morning. The vote was originally set for last weekend but was postponed amid heavy snowfall and blizzard warnings.

Kohler makes kitchen and bath fixtures. Its so-called final offer includes a two-tier wage system, extensive use of temporary labor and a five-year pay freeze for current employees, with bonuses.

Dave Boucher is a spokesman for the United Auto Workers Local 833. He says union leaders aren't recommending the offer be accepted.

UAW officials tell The Sheboygan Press a strike is a possibility but they'd prefer that a no vote lead to more negotiation. However, the company has said it's done negotiating.
