Sun Drop soda pop goes national

SHAWANO (WAOW)--The original "Golden Cola" is going national. Dr. Pepper Snapple announced last week they plan to market the brand across the United States stating in 2011.

A local bottler in Shawano was first to distribute the soda in Wisconsin more than 50 years ago. Twig's Beverage, Inc. is operated by Dan Hartwig. He said he's thrilled about the company's plans to expand the brand.

Twig's produces about 500 cases a day of Sun Drop. The Shawano based beverage company is the last bottler to offer old-fashioned bottle refills.

Hartwig said the nationwide campaign could benefit Twig's and Shawano. "If we can increase our business and our industry, it will help out more jobs, things like that, so it will help out all the way around."

Sun Drop is similar to Mountain Dew, but has a higher caffeine content. Hartwig said Mountain Dew was modeled after the popular tangy soda pop.

Currently, Sun Drop is marketed in pocket areas including the south and northeast. Hartwig said Dr. Pepper Snapple plans to pump about 20 million dollars into the brand over the next five years, marketing the drink to 15-17 year-olds.

Only time will tell if the drink will catch on, positively impacting the growth of small bottlers like Twig's Beverage, Inc.
