Henry A. Laszewski, age 99, of Stevens Point, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 21, 2010, at Ministry St. Michael's Hospital.
He was born on April 9, 1911, in Wausau to the late Anton and Sophia (Pyterek) Laszewski and attended St. Peter's Grade School in Stevens Point.
On Oct. 6, 1942, Henry entered the U.S. Army. He served with the 339th Engineers as a heavy equipment operator in British New Guinea, Dutch New Guinea and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 24, 1945, at the rank of Tech. 5.
He was employed at Preway Corp. in Wisconsin Rapids for 19 years and Bake-Rite Company in Plover for 10 years. In his retirement, he continued to work part-time for Portage County at the Commission on Aging and the Ruth Gilfrey Center as a Meals-on-Wheels bus driver and a custodian, respectively. His interests included gardening, fishing, wild berry and mushroom picking, the Chicago Cubs, card playing, big band music and dancing with his wife. He was an usher and member of the Holy Name Society at St. Peter Catholic Church and a member of American Legion Post No. 6.
Henry married Isabelle Zywicke on Jan. 17, 1948, at St. Casimir Catholic Church in the town of Hull. She survives along with nine children, Mary Jane Dekeyser, Patricia (Dave) Sonnenberg, Virginia (Warren Asher), Jerome (Cindy Florchak), Dennis (Rhonda Kraft), Bernadette (John Fossen), Katherine (Mario Ghanzanfari), Constance and Paul; seven grandchildren, Carrie, Eric, Sara, Rebecca, Rylan, Henry and Ray; four great-grandchildren, Cate, James, Tate and Nora; his stepsister, Velma; stepbrothers, Stanley, Fr. Richard and James (Jan); and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his son, Peter; sister, Catherine Barnesdale; stepsisters, Eleanor Giddinger, Alice Mason and Theresa Morson; and stepbrothers, Ambrose, Joseph and Anton Jr.
Henry loved his wife and children.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27th, at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin C. Louis officiating. Burial will follow in Guardian Angel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home, Stevens Point, and again on Monday in the St. Faustina Room of the church from 9 a.m. until the time for Mass. American Legion Post No. 6 will hold a ritual at 5:45 p.m. and St. Peter's Holy Name Society will pray the rosary at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
