UWSP Men Blow Out Oshkosh to Open Pointer Doubleheader

STEVENS POINT (Press Release) - Louis Hurd had 16 points to lead the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team to a dominating 76-47 victory over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night at Bennett Court in the first WIAC battle of the new year for both teams.

In the game's opening half the Pointers shot 59 percent from the field as they took a 34-19 lead into the break.  The Pointers finished the night shooting 55 percent (26-47) from the field.

The Pointers were in control for much of the night.  After battling the Titans early the host Pointers built  a 10 point (23-13) lead with 6:46 to go in the first half.  UW-Oshkosh would get no closer the rest of the way as the Pointers cruised to a 29 point victory.

Tyler Tillema also scored in double figures for the Pointers as he finished with 11 points.  His brother Dan Tillema had a big night, finishing with nine points and leading the team with eight rebounds.

The Pointers dominated the game on the inside as they had a 32-14 edge in points in the paint.  The Pointers bench was also a key factor in the win as they outscored the Titans bench 37-19.

Not only did the Pointers shoot well from the floor on Wednesday night but they also were six of eleven from three point range and they made 18 of their 20 free attempts, good for 90 percent.

Jordan Giordana was two for two from three as he finished the night with eight points for the Pointers. Hurd was five of five from the free throw line and Scott Hoelzel made all four of his free throw attempts.

No Titans player scored in double figures as the Pointers held the Titans to 35 percent (17-48) shooting on the night and forced 18 Titan turnovers.

The win improves the Pointers to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC.  It was the fifth straight win for the Pointers.

The Pointers will host UW-La Crosse on Saturday at Bennett Court.  Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
