WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Never Forgotten Honor Flight was highlighted Saturday on TV9 and 34.  It's a half-hour special that takes you along as more than a 100 World War II veterans from northern Wisconsin take a one-day trip to Washington, DC.

Never Forgotten Honor Flight is funded solely through donations.  Every last cent is appreciated by veterans.  Time and time again, they talk about how truly amazed they are that people would spend the time and resources to give them this special day.

It was my pleasure to ride along on the trip October 4th, 2010.  I learned firsthand from veterans who talk about their military service, special moments along the way and the effect war took on their lives.

The day is filled with tremendous moments.  A true sight to behold as veterans step off the bus at the WWII monument and lay their eyes on the structure for the first time.  It's a lot to take in.  They stood shoulder to shoulder for pictures, and on cue, gave a soldier's salute.  It was great to overhear conversations of other visitors who wondered who the group of men and women in blue jackets were.

There are so many people to thank along the way, yet it's always deflected another way.  Everyone from the Never Forgotten Honor Flight board is quick to point out the veterans deserve the thanks.  The board's honor is to help make this day happen for the vets.

Along those lines I wanted to list the members of the NFHF board.

Jim Campbell (co-chairman)

Mike Thompson (co-chairman)

Kirk Howard (P/R & Marketing)

Pat Puyleart (Treasurer)

Jeff Zriny (Secretary)

Ryan Gossett  MD

Dick Jarvis

Roger Knuth

Richard La Certe

Plans are in the works for more flights.  And no doubt they will fill quickly with veterans eager to see the World War II monument and other sites dedicated them in our nation's capitol.

Here's a link to the NFHF website.  It lists ways you can help send veterans to Washington, DC.

Once again, the TV9 and 34 show on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight airs Saturday, January 8 at 5pm.
