WAUSAU (WAOW)--January is Radon Awareness month and experts want you to take the right steps to make sure your home is safe.
Radon is a radioactive gas produced by rock and soil broken down around a home.
When inhaled over a long period of time, it can cause lung cancer.
Experts say radon levels are higher than the national average in Marathon County and surrounding areas, so it's important to have your home tested and mitigated if needed.
There are a few options if you want to test your home. You can try an at-home test bought at a hardware store, or you can call in a certified technician to test for radon levels.
If high levels are found, your home may need to be mitigated by a professional.
