STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE)- The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team used a 15-0 run midway through the second half to help put away the Eagles of UW-La Crosse on Saturday as the Pointers rolled to a 89-58 victory.
The Pointers took a 44-36 lead into the half and then dominated the final 20 minutes as they outscored the Eagles 45-22 in the second half.
Scott Hoelzel had a big day for the Pointers as he finished with 15 points and a team high seven rebounds. Hoelzel had 13 of his 15 points in the first half on six of six shooting.
Jerrel Harris led the way for the Pointers as he had a game high 17 points on six of nine shooting. Dan Tillema finished the game with nine points and a game high four assists.
The Pointers dominated in many aspects of the game but one area where they really excelled at on Saturday was in the points in the paint category. The Pointers outscored the Eagles 50-22 on points in the paint.
Louis Hurd finished with nine points and Vinny Ritchay added eight first half points off the bench to help aid the Pointers to their big win.
The Pointers shot 60 percent (17-28) in the second half compared to the Eagles 21 percent (8-37) in the final 20 minutes. For the game the Pointers shot 58 percent (33-57) from the field.
The win was the sixth straight for the Pointers who improved to 11-2 on the season. They are now 4-1 in WIAC play.
The Pointers return to action on Monday when they will host Macalaster at Bennett Court. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
