Property tax deadline looms

By Bonnie Shelton

WAUSAU (WAOW)--January 31st is the deadline to pay your property taxes in full or pay your first installment.

City leaders want to remind you the Marathon County courthouse does not accept payment. Property taxes go to the local treasurer.

If unpaid, the courthouse collects the taxes with interest and penalty starting February 1st.

After that, Interest increases by one and a half percent each month.

"Eventually if the people don't pay their taxes then we start a process called tax deed where we do certified letters and at that point once they don't pay it long enough, we can take their property away," said County Treasurer Lorraine Beyersdorff.

The County Treasurer says the amount of tax certified letters sent out each year varies, but the Marathon County courthouse has seen an increase of about one million dollars owed in unpaid taxes and interest in the past few years.
