Police suggest using caution on frozen lakes

By Bonnie Shelton

MOSINEE (WAOW)--After a snowmobiler fell through the ice on Half Moon Lake Saturday night, the Marathon County Sheriff's office is advising residents to use caution on frozen bodies of water.

The man fell through the ice around 8:30 p.m. Police and firefighters were called in to search for him.

According to authorities, he was able to crawl out of the water soon after being submerged. His snowmobile is at the bottom of the lake.

Two others who were snowmobiling with the man at the time of the accident were able to reach the shore unharmed.

Officers say although ice can be thick and sturdy at one point in the day, weather and water flow can change conditions quickly.
