DNA expert testimony in the Ponce-Rocha murder trial

By Heather Sawaski

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- A technical day of testimony Monday in the murder trial of Raul Ponce-Rocha. The prosecution used DNA experts to try and form a scientific connection between the defendant and the victim, Breanna Schneller.

The prosecution is ready to rest its case, but not before they called 4 expert witnesses to testify to the DNA found at the crime scene.

DNA analyst Lisa Misner told the jury how she tested several pieces of evidence in the case. She explained how the handle of the plastic bag found in a dumpster had blood stains consistent with DNA from both Breanna Schneller and Raul Ponce-Rocha.

Schneller's fingernails were also tested, and Misner said some of the DNA found on them is consistent with Ponce-Rocha.

Also, the striped glove found inside of the plastic bag, Misner said she found reason to believe DNA from both Schneller and Ponce-Rocha was in a blood stain on the cuff. She said while there's no certainty, it's a one in 2 million chance the DNA came from someone other than Raul Ponce-Rocha.

However, on cross-examination Misner testified that none of Ponce-Rocha's DNA was found on the knives from the scene, or the samples tested from the shoes and clothing he said he was wearing the day of the murder.

The defense is expected to start calling its witnesses in this case Tuesday morning.
