Joan M. Wunsch, 77, Wausau, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital after a battle with cancer.
Joan was born Oct. 24, 1933, in Wausau to the late Lawrence and Louise (Livernash) Nowitzke. She married Lawrence Wunsch on Oct. 23, 1952, in Pine City, Minn. He preceded her in death Jan. 27, 2008.
Joan was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and worked at the Wisconsin Valley Fair every year in the VFW Booth. She loved dachshunds and owned many of them through the years. Card playing was one of her favorite pastimes and played almost daily with her sister; girlfriend, Joyce Ullenburg; and niece, Mary Mansell. Joan enjoyed bowling for many years and traveled every year with the bowling groups to different places. She loved baking for her family and sharing with others her baking delights. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all her heart, as they were the center of her world.
Survivors include her three sons, Jeffrey (Lisa) Wunsch, Patrick (Diane) Wunsch and Lon Wunsch, all of Wausau; four grandchildren, Shawn Fehl, Lockport, Ill., Ashley and Ben Wunsch, Wausau, and Lisa Wunsch, Lombard, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Savannah LaQue, and Chloe Wunsch; two sisters, Eleanor (David) Porosky, Milwaukee, and LouAnn Wood, Wausau; a brother, Morris (Dorothy) Nowitzke, Wausau; and her dachshund, Marvin.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy; and two brothers, Buddy and David Nowitzke.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at the Church of St. Anne, 700 W. Bridge St., Wausau. The Rev. Steven Brice will celebrate. Private family burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau, where the VFW Ladies Auxiliary will have a memorial service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church.
