Pauline "Polly" A. Gering


Pauline "Polly" A. Gering, 95, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Stone Crest Residence, Wausau.

Pauline "Polly" A. Stein was born July 3, 1915, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Paul and Lydia Kemp Stein. She spent her childhood in Indiana, Ohio and Chicago where she graduated from high school in 1932. She married Franklin Gering on Sept. 25, 1937, in Chicago, and they were married for 71 years.

The family moved to Wausau in 1943. Polly was actively involved in Immanuel Baptist Church where she served as president of the Women's Missionary Society, was a youth leader, helped with AWANA, and made many home and hospital visitations. She was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary, volunteered for Mobile Meals, and worked in the Aspirus Wausau Hospital gift shop in addition to visiting hospital patients through the chaplaincy program. For many years she served as an election judge.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy (Jon) Thorsheim, Hastings, Neb., Joyce (Warren) Camp, Bloomington, Minn., and Jane (Mel) Chen, Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Lynn (Erich) Thorsheim Strack, Lincoln, Neb., Christopher Camp, Minneapolis, Todd Thorsheim, Omaha, Neb., Corey (Tara) Camp, Sioux Falls, S.D., Michael (Susan) Chen, Sarasota, and David (Jokonda) Chen, Killeen, Texas; great-grandchildren, Cayden and Kyah Camp, Sioux Falls, Christopher and Nicholas Chen, Killeen, and Pyrce Chen, Sarasota. Polly is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jean Gering and Dawn Gering of Wausau; and many nieces and nephews.

Polly was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; brothers, Kemp Stein and Paul Stein; brothers-in-law, Clifford, Owen and Edward Gering; and sisters-in-law, Jeane Stein, Hazel Stein and Gladys Gering.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 5100 Hummingbird Road, Wausau. The Rev. Dr. James Engle will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service Friday at the church.

The family extends appreciation for the loving care shown to Polly by the staff of Stone Crest Residence and Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau, assisted the family with arrangements.
