Defense rests in Ponce-Rocha murder trial

By Heather Sawaski

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The defense in the Ponce-Rocha murder trial rested its case Wednesday morning after calling its last four witnesses.

Three of those witnesses testified to knowing Sergio, the friend Raul Ponce-Rocha said was with Breanna Schneller the morning of her murder.

Jorge Andre said he worked with Sergio at Pollywood Fabrication in Wausau in May of 2009. He told the jury after Schneller was murdered, Sergio started acting differently, not making eye contact. Andre also said Sergio died his hair blonde.

Lucia Pintor Bailon testified to also working with Sergio in May 2009. She told the jury that days after the murder, she recalled seeing Sergio at work with a large scratch on his neck.

However, on cross-examination by the prosecution, neither witness was able to give exact dates they recall seeing Sergio at work.

Last on the stand was Whitney Mason. She said she's Sergio's ex-girlfriend. She told the jury Sergio acted strange towards her after the murder, and tried to cover up a large scratch on his neck. She said they broke up when Sergio moved back to Mexico at the end of May 2009.

The prosecution is preparing its rebuttal case, which will take place Wednesday afternoon.
