WESTON (WAOW) -- The DC Everest school district looks to open a new charter school this fall.

Students at the Idea Charter School can take advantage of non-traditional styles of education, by working on projects and working with their advisors.

"We're just providing another opportunity for students in the district to be successful," said DC Everest Middle School Tech Ed teacher John Vanderwyst. "Just another building, another atmosphere, another environment in which some kids might find that it's a better fit for them."

The teacher-student ratio will be lower than usual, with about 15 students per advisor. The school will be open for 6th-10th graders for the 2011-2012 school year and will eventually expand to 11th and 12th graders too. Students have the ability to work at their own pace and have the flexibility to go in depth on subjects they are interested in.

"Students who want self direction, who want a say in their education and who would thrive in that type of environment," said DC Everest Middle School Language Arts teacher Sue Thompson.

Unlike some other charter schools, the Idea School will not be in a traditional school building. The district hasn't picked a site yet, but plan to do so soon. Thompson and Vanderwyst will be two of the teachers at Idea. They will be joined by Luke Stachovak and Jacques du Vair, who currently teach at DC Everest High School.

The district plans to have a series of meetings over the next few weeks, all of which will be at 6:30 PM.

The first one will be on January 24th at the DCE Junior High Theater, which targets parents of current junior high school students.

The next one will be on January 25th at the DCE Middle School IMC, which is for parents of current middle schoolers.

The meeting geared towards parents of current fifth graders will be on January 27th at the DCE Middle School IMC.

And the final meeting will be on January 31st at the DCE Administration building.

The target audience for this meeting is parents of parochial, home school or open enrollment students. Even though the meetings are targeted towards certain groups, anyone is welcome to attend any of them.

If you cannot attend one of the meetings, you can find more information about the program at this website

The deadline to apply is February 15th.
